Meet Melissa
Hello! I’m glad you are here.
I am Melissa, a dedicated provider focused on supporting children and adolescents in North Carolina.
My undergraduate experience took me on a long and winding path that led me to the breathtaking scenery of the Appalachian Mountains, It was here in the mountains that I completed my degree in Psychology. During my time in college, I had the privilege of working as summer staff at a camp near Asheville. It was there that I fell in love with Western North Carolina—the mountains, the community, and the sense of belonging. Camp continues to hold a deep place in my heart; it’s where I first became a counselor, where I met my husband, and where we have returned over the years as our family has grown, creating meaningful memories with our two children.
My early career is a beautiful tapestry of supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, teaching children from pre-k through high school, and empowering teens that have experienced significant hardship. Eventually, I went back to school and earned my MA in School Counseling with a focus on children and adolescents. I believe that investing in young people helps shape the adults they will become. My approach centers on building trust, fostering resilience, and helping youth develop a strong sense of self. I strive to create a supportive and engaging environment where young people feel seen, heard, and empowered.

At Blue Ridge Expressive Arts, I believe in meeting children, adolescents and teens where they are. I take a compassionate, individualized approach, viewing each child as more than a diagnosis or set of challenges. Together, we explore their strengths, build on their resilience and create a path forward that supports their emotional, behavioral, mental health, and developmental needs.
My services are designed for children and teens experiencing mild to moderate emotional or behavioral concerns who can continue living at home, attending school, and participating in their daily routines while receiving support.

The loss of a loved one can profoundly affect a child or teen, often in ways that may not be immediately visible. Children grieve differently than adults, and their emotions can surface through changes in behavior, school performance, relationships, sleep patterns, or physical symptoms. They may experience sadness, anger, confusion, fear, guilt, or a sense of isolation while trying to make sense of a world that suddenly feels different.
Grief counseling is tailored to each child's developmental level, personal experiences, and unique needs. I provide a compassionate and supportive space where children and adolescents can process grief at their own pace while fostering hope and healing while honoring their loss.
I believe caregivers are an essential part of the healing process. I work with parents and caregivers to help them understand how grief may be affecting their child and to provide guidance in supporting their child's emotional needs at home.
There is no "right way" or timeline for grief. My goal is to provide a safe, nurturing environment where children and teens feel seen, supported, and empowered as they navigate their grief journey and move toward healing with compassion, connection, and hope.

Children are deeply connected to the experiences of their families. When a child, caregiver or family member experiences a medical crisis such as a traumatic pregnancy, birth, postpartum complication, serious illness, injury, or other medical crisis or trauma, the effects are felt by the entire family system. Even when children do not fully understand what happened, they often sense the stress, uncertainty, and emotional changes surrounding them.
Every child experiences these situations differently. Some may become highly attuned to the needs of others, while others may struggle with worries, fears, perfectionism, or a heightened need for control while others want to put the entire experience in a vault that is not discussed. For many families, life becomes defined as "before" and "after" the event, with children adapting to circumstances that may feel normal to them, despite having a significant impact on their development.
At the same time, these experiences can shape remarkable strengths. Children may develop resilience, empathy, adaptability, compassion, and a deeper appreciation for relationships. Yet they may not fully recognize how these experiences have influenced their beliefs about themselves, their family, and the world around them.
In my practice, children, adolescents and teens are offered a safe, creative space to explore their unique experiences and perspectives. Therapy can help them make sense of feelings that may be difficult to express, recognize strengths that have emerged through adversity, and better understand how life experiences have shaped their developing values, relationships, and worldview.
By exploring both the challenges and strengths that emerge from these experiences, children can gain greater self-awareness, emotional confidence, and a stronger sense of connection to their own story. Healing is not about changing the past; it is about understanding its impact and moving forward with resilience, hope, and a deeper understanding of oneself.

For many caregivers of children with special needs, the deepest hope is their child would be accepted, understood, and supported in becoming the fullest version of themselves.
Beyond specific diagnoses, many parents hope their child will:
Feel loved and valued for who they are
Develop confidence and a positive sense of self
Build meaningful relationships and friendships
Experience joy, belonging, and inclusion
Learn to advocate for their needs and strengths
Develop independence to the greatest extent possible
Feel safe expressing their emotions
Have opportunities to pursue their interests and passions
Recognize their own resilience and capabilities
Live a meaningful, fulfilling life
For caregivers of children with complex medical needs or disabilities, there is often an added layer of hope. They may want their child to:
Understand that they are more than a diagnosis
Feel empowered rather than limited by their challenges
Navigate medical experiences without being defined by them
Develop emotional tools to cope with uncertainty and stress
Maintain hope, curiosity, and a sense of possibility
Build a strong identity that extends beyond hospitals, therapies, and appointments
Caregivers of children with special needs often carry many hopes for their child. They want their child to feel confident, connected, and valued for who they are. They want them to recognize their strengths, develop meaningful relationships, and experience a sense of belonging in the world.
At Blue Ridge Expressive Arts, I believe every child deserves a space where they can explore their emotions, celebrate their unique strengths, and develop a deeper understanding of themselves. Through creative expression and a supportive therapeutic relationship, children can build confidence, resilience, self-awareness, and the skills needed to thrive in their own unique way.
Therapy is not about changing who a child is. It is about helping them discover their strengths, find their voice, and feel empowered to navigate life's challenges with confidence and authenticity.
Blue Ridge EXA is located on the second floor of a building without an elevator. If this restricts access to care please reach out to me to discuss other options.

Children and teens do not always have the words to express what they are feeling. Emotions such as anxiety, sadness, anger, grief, or stress can be difficult to understand and even harder to talk about. Expressive Arts Therapy provides a safe, creative, and supportive space where young people can explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences through artistic expression.
I believe that healing and growth can happen through creativity, play, imagination, and connection. Using a variety of creative approaches, including visual art, movement, music, storytelling, creative writing, and play-based activities, children and adolescents can communicate in ways that feel natural and comfortable to them.
Expressive Arts Therapy is not about artistic talent or creating a perfect piece of art. Instead, the focus is on the process of self-expression, self-discovery, and emotional growth. Through creative exploration, youth can develop healthy coping skills, build confidence, strengthen emotional awareness, improve communication, and learn new ways to navigate life's challenges.
Through creativity, children and adolescents can discover new ways to understand themselves, express their feelings, and develop the tools they need to thrive. My goal is to help each young person feel empowered, connected, and supported on their journey toward healing and well-being.
Expressive Arts Therapy may be beneficial for children and adolescents experiencing:
Anxiety and worry
Depression and low mood
Emotional regulation difficulties
Behavioral challenges
Trauma and stressful life experiences
Grief and loss
Social and relationship concerns
Low self-esteem or confidence
Life transitions and adjustment difficulties

Children with ADHD often possess incredible strengths, including creativity, curiosity, energy, intuition, and a unique way of experiencing the world. While ADHD can present challenges with attention, organization, emotional regulation, impulse control, transitions, and social relationships. It is important to recognize that ADHD is not simply a disorder to be fixed. Many individuals and professionals view ADHD on a spectrum under neurodivergence, one with both challenges and gifts. Understanding how a child's brain works can be the first step toward helping them thrive.
At Blue Ridge Expressive Arts, I believe that children with ADHD deserve support that celebrates their strengths while helping them navigate areas of difficulty. Every child experiences ADHD differently, and I take an individualized approach that honors each child's unique personality, interests, and ways of learning.
Through Expressive Arts Therapy, children and adolescents are offered a creative and engaging space to build self-awareness, process emotions, and develop skills that support success at home, school, and in relationships. Using art, movement, storytelling, play, and mindfulness-based activities, children can explore both the challenges and strengths that come with their neurodivergent way of thinking and experiencing the world.
Therapy may help children and adolescents with ADHD:
Strengthen self-esteem and self-confidence
Improve emotional regulation and frustration tolerance
Develop coping and organizational skills
Increase self-awareness and self-advocacy
Navigate social challenges and relationships
Manage anxiety, stress, or perfectionism
Identify and build upon their natural strengths
Foster a greater sense of competence and success
Families are an important part of the therapeutic process. I work collaboratively with parents and caregivers to help children better understand themselves, recognize their strengths, and develop strategies that support their growth and well-being.
My goal is to help children and adolescents see ADHD not as something that defines their limitations, but as one part of their unique identity. Through creativity, connection, and compassionate support, they can develop confidence in themselves, appreciate the strengths of their neurodivergent brain, and thrive as their authentic selves.

The journey toward support begins with a free 15-minute consultation. This allows us to get to know one another, explore your child's needs, and determine whether my services are a good fit. Together, we'll discuss the most appropriate treatment options. If additional support is recommended, I can assist with referrals to the appropriate level of care.
Finding the right level of care can feel overwhelming, but it is an important step toward helping children and adolescents heal, grow, and thrive. Every child is unique, with their own strengths, challenges, experiences, and goals. Because of this, the support they need may look different from one child to the next.

Each session is shaped by what feels most present for your child in that moment. I offer a person-centered, strengths based and integrative approach that honors each child’s inner knowing while gently exploring the patterns and stories that shape their experience.
Our work together begins with arriving, checking in and settling into the space together. I incorporate narrative, strengths based and expressive arts therapy for a more gentle approach to the session. I may invite your child to explore their experience through a different medium other than talking, such as writing, drawing, clay, or play exploration. We may decide to walk together outside (our practice is next to the Boone United Methodist Church trail up Howard’s Knob). Nature can be wonderfully helpful in slowing down as we believe busy bodies opens hearts and minds. Additionally, there are therapeutic benefits from the bilateral stimulation that walking provides.
In our sessions we will work on developing a deeper awareness of your child’s strengths and resources that support their healing, including support networks and coping strategies that we develop as we explore their experience.

The health and safety of clinicians and clients is our biggest priority at Blue Ridge EXA.
During treatment, we encourage parents to work closely with their child's clinician to ensure proper check ins and check outs are occurring. A plan will be created with Melissa surrounding expectations of therapy sessions and arrangements for the appropriate starting and ending to each and every session. It is crucial that appointments start and end on time to ensure the best of care to all of our clients at Blue Ridge EXA. In the event that there are continued violations of start and end times, therapeutic services could be terminated.
Clients under the age of 13 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian during drop-off and pick up so that the clinician can confirm who the child leaves with and to ensure that the child does not leave the office without parental or legal guardian accompaniment. In the event another adult in the child's life will be involved with pick up and drop offs, the appropriate documentation is required and planning must occur before the onset of that anticipated change.
At the clinician's sole discretion, parents or legal guardians may be required to remain in the waiting area throughout the entire treatment session and/or be in the waiting room 10 minutes before the end time of the session. Parents agree to work with the clinician's protocol regarding this issue and/or any issue that arises surrounding the therapeutic session with a minor where alternative arrangements need to be made. In the event that arrangements cannot be made, treatment will need to be terminated and referrals for a new clinician will be supplied.
